Good Morning December 30

In visiting a Gettysburg, Pennsylvania book store I ran across a book called The Gettysburg Gospel. It was analyzing Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address after the Civil War. I was struck by how freely we have come to use the word “gospel”. We say such and such a thing is gospel, or that’s the gospel truth. Gospel means “good news”. It is the message the angels brought to the shepherds over the Bethlehem hills. “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Messiah, the Lord.”(Luke 2:10-11) Gospel is not some general good news applied to any helpful message. It is the good news that the Messiah, Christ the Lord, has been born. He is the Savior for all people. Christ-mas is about Almighty God coming among us in His Son, Jesus Christ, to save us from the death our sins have brought upon us. It can be no other, and there is no greater Good News.
