Good Morning August 12

Many people find reading the Old Testament history of Israel unpleasant, even barbaric in places. Nonetheless, there are many parts that are instructive for our own times. For example, when Israel was united and following the leader God gave them, and the laws He established, things went well for them. When they put aside those values they got themselves into trouble. Several times it is recorded, “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”(Judges 21:25) Our day is marked by a lack of regard for absolute values. Even the concept of natural law, set truths given by God that guided our founders, is not present. The concept of revealed truth is rejected by many, and people are left “doing what is right in our own eyes.” The wise words in Proverbs said it correctly. “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.”(29:18) We see the casting off of restraint all around us. Perhaps it is time we considered again some of those Old Testament lessons, and heed wisdom’s instruction.
