What is sin? I think many see sin just as bad things out there that we are not supposed to do – lying, cheating, stealing, murdering, etc. But sin really is inside. It is that battle of wills that puts the “I wants” up against what God wants for me. The New Testament book of James says, “each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;…”(1:14-15) The process is exactly the same as what Eve faced in the Garden. “Oh, but that fruit looks so good. It is so desirable. It can’t be so bad.” Our wants against what God wants for us, this is Paul’s whole struggle in Romans chapter seven. What we need to remember is that God’s will is not like medicine – it tastes terrible but it’s good for you. God’s will really is the best of the best. Jesus has done everything possible so that we can find and live in that will. The more we realize where the true struggle with sin lies, the more we can humbly yield our will to our Lord, and find our best life in Him.
