Good Morning
What does it mean to be a Christian? I had the opportunity recently to ask someone that. It’s a question I sometimes use because in today’s world most do not have any clear concept of our faith, even if they have been a church member for years. The response is often just to believe in God and try to live a decent life. The designation Christian begins with the name Christ. Christ means Messiah, One sent to redeem or save. We’ve recently celebrated the birth of Jesus, the Christ child, who grew into manhood and completed all the works we celebrate in Good Friday and Easter Sunday. This is the birth, life, death, and resurrection of One who declared Himself, and was acknowledge by others, to be God in human flesh. To be Christian is not just to believe in the general existence of god, but to believe in the one true God who has revealed Himself in the person of Jesus Christ. One must then ask why would an Almighty God do such a thing? The Apostle John answers that by saying, “God has loved you so much that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him would not perish but have eternal life.”(3:16) This says that without God’s gracious intervention in Jesus Christ we would perish, be eternally separated from Him. Jesus is essential. He is not just a moral teacher, or a nice add-on to make life a little better. Jesus is the source and center of a Christian’s life.
