The Fifteenth chapter of Second Chronicles recounts the reign of Asa, King of Judah. The kingdom had fallen into much idolatry in the years before Asa, and verse 3 says, “for a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law.” The land had been in much distress, and this pointed to the reason. I find this so descriptive of our time as well as any times that people choose to turn their backs on the Lord. We have set up a multiplicity of gods, be they wealth, power, intellect, science, or any number of man centered, man pleasing idols. We have rejected true priests who hold to and teach from God’s revealed Word. And we’ve rejected God’s laws in favor of tolerance for all values as equally valid truths. There is one true God who created us, who has revealed Himself in numerous way through thousands of years of history, who has done the incredible act of coming among us in Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord, and who has promised to return again at the conclusion of the age. He is One God in Triune nature, who by His Spirit has given us His Word in Holy Scripture. It is long past time that we should humble ourselves before our God, listen to His true teaching priests, and pay attention to His laws. Maybe 2500 year old history really does have something to teach us moderns.
