A billion and a half dollars! One and a half thousand million dollars! That amount has captivated the minds of millions of people as they stood in line to buy Power Ball lottery tickets. The odds of picking the six correct numbers are infinitesimally small, yet they continue to hope and to dream. “Some one will win it”, they say, “it could be me”. And the odds of throwing one’s money away are astronomically high. It has also been shown that life has not turned our for well for those who have won such large amounts. Yet people continue to chase them. They are seeking a life that is free from fear and worry. They want the good things life has to offer. They have charitable desires to help family and others. They believe they will have the strength and resources to accomplish what they want in life. But do we not say that our Lord offers us all of these through faith in Jesus Christ? “Oh, but faith, that’s …. that’s….” It seems to me that it take more faith to believe in a three million to one shot of winning the lottery! Faith in our Lord who has promised never to leave or forsake us, seems much more of a sure thing to me. What was it Jesus said to the crowds gathered on the Galilean hillside? “For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”(Matthew 6:32-34) But I suspect the next Power Ball lines will be just as long.
