It was the night before the crucifixion, a very frightening and uncertain time for the disciples of Jesus. He told them He would be going away, and that they knew the place where He was going. Thomas responded, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”(John 14:5) It seems to me Thomas’ question expresses how we feel in our frightening and uncertain times of life. “Lord, what is this all about? Where are You going? Where are You taking me?” As with many of Jesus’ responses to questions, He doesn’t answer what the questioner thinks he wants, but gives him the answer that he truly needs. Jesus said to Thomas, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”(vs.6) Jesus was saying that our direction is always toward the Father. His life and His purpose is our destination. Jesus is the One who alone leads us to all that is true, and all that gives life. Regardless of the intermediate places the path may lead, keeping our eye on Jesus will lead us in the right way. We don’t get direct answers to all our questions about life, but we get the answer we need by following the One who is the way, the truth, and the life.
