I love some of the old Gospel songs. We have several CDs in the car that I will play and sing along. They tend to be weak in theology, and narrow in their focus. They can’t be compared to Isaac Watts or Paul Gerhardt, but that is not the point. They are love songs. Love songs can be soft, or maybe you would say mushy. They don’t take into account all that is involved in a truly committed relationship, but they do express the desire to be a part of the beloved. They are heart expressions of wanting to be with One we love deeply. Jesus is our Bridegroom. He loves us, and we find our ways to express our deepest love for Him, even old Gospel songs. I will never give up on the great hymn writers, but I sure do enjoy singing out with the words of “In The Garden”, or “How Great Thou Art”.
