Years ago a young girl that lived next door to us was given a school assignment to look something up in the Bible and write on it. I said it was years ago!! Her mother came over to my mother to ask her about it, but began with the complaint that “nobody can understand the Bible”. Many people will refer to the Bible as God’s Word. But if it is, wouldn’t we think it is incumbent upon us to want to know what He has to say? Yet Bible knowledge is dismally poor in society, and more seriously within the Church. This should not be. Moses wrote of the commandments he was giving Israel, “What I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.”(Deuteronomy 30:11) We expend a lot of energy learning lessons in schools saying that this is necessary to gain a good profession and way of life in the world – a way of life that will last only a few years. While God’s Word opens a way of life that lasts for eternity. It seems that something is a bit askew.
