An Xfinity commercial begins by asking a group of people “how important is WiFi in your house?” They all answer that it is very important. Each family member needs to be able to connect to the internet for messaging, searching, or streaming entertainment. Now I’ve said before that I use the internet, and it is important, but this constant addiction is deadly. And it is an addiction. We lose the ability to be quiet, to think, to be at peace. The Psalmist tells us to “Be still, and know that I am God…”(46:10) The Prophet Isaiah says, “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength,…”(30:15) Learning to be still, to be quiet is necessary for all people, and it should start with the very young. It is in this that we draw strength and guidance from the Lord and from His Word. OK, I’ll get off the topic of the internet, at least for a while, but how about trying an experiment, a fast. Put away the smart phone for a day. Take some time to be quiet reading and thinking about a few passages of Scripture. Read a real book. Look around at the world and see what wonders God has provided.
