I have mentioned a number of times here that I am not an economist, and know very little about that field. There is currently a lot of controversy about the new budget the president sent to congress with numerous cuts to social programs. There are a number of things I don’t agree with, but setting that aside, we are running a deficit with numbers that no one can fully comprehend, and cannot be sustained. The budget question points to something much deeper. Are we willing to make sacrifices for the good of the whole community? Are we willing as individuals and churches to fill in the needs that government can no longer supply? We have allowed so much to be governed by emotions rather than common sense. We have expected governments to provide all our needs. We’ve lost the ability to sacrifice, to put the needs of others before ourselves, and to make decision based on true love for our neighbor. Jesus calls us to take up our cross and follow Him. That applies to more than just our spiritual walk.
