Good Morning January 26

Everyone hates the C word. There is apprehension and fear when one hears a diagnosis of cancer. It usually means lengthy and painful treatments. A person wants to seek the best medical option that is currently available.  The value of the treatment is in proportion to the seriousness of the disease. We have learned how serious this disease is, and so seek the best treatment possible. Now to my spiritual parallel. I am thinking of people’s attitude toward our Lord Jesus. We have a serious, in fact terminal, disease called sin. “All have sinned,” Paul tells us, “and fall short of the glory of God”.(Romans 3:23)  The Christian faith declares that because of our sin we are lost, condemned, and separated from God. We deserve eternal death. Yet Jesus took the penalty for our sins in His own body, dying in our place, and giving us as a free and unearned gift His perfect righteousness before God. We have salvation and life through faith in Jesus Christ. The problem is that too many today minimize the seriousness of sin. In so doing they minimize the value of the Saviour. He becomes only a great moral teacher, and a perfect example of love. Think about the disease. One far more serious than cancer. And humbly bow in worship of our gracious Lord.

Good Morning September 15

When I was growing up polio was a horrible scourge for many children. We would see pictures of kids laying flat inside of an iron lung because the disease had made them unable to breathe on their own.  In 1955 Dr. Jonas Salk found a vaccine that ultimately eliminated polio from much of the world. He was hailed worldwide as a miracle worker. Can you imaging what would happen today if a researcher found a cure for all cancers.  That name would be a household word. It would be front page news in every paper. The Nobel prize would be given along with whatever other accolades the world would muster.  These illustrations point out that the size of the honor is in proportion to overcoming the seriousness of the disease. Every human being is infected with the most serious disease called sin. It is a disease that eternally separates us from our Holy God. But a cure has been found. It is in the sacrificial blood of Jesus Christ who atoned for the sins of all mankind. Those recipients of the Salk vaccine did nothing for it. They were very grateful receivers of the gift medical science gave. So too, we have done nothing to receive the forgiving grace of our Lord. We can only fall before Him in grateful thanksgiving. When we realize the deadly seriousness of the disease, we highly honor the One who brings the cure. Jesus is the name above all other names.

Good Morning November 16

The esteem and honor given to a cure is directly related to the seriousness of the disease. If a scientist were to find a cure for hangnails, so that no one would ever get another hangnail, that would be a rather ho-hum event. If someone where to find a complete cure for all cancer, he would be lauded world wide and given the Nobel prize. The problem with the acceptance of Jesus is that too many don’t see the seriousness of the disease of sin. All people are infected with the disease of sin. We are corrupt to the core and separated from God. The only remedy is the atoning sacrifice of Christ. The Apostle John wrote, “He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for those of the whole world.” (I J.2:2) For those who see the seriousness of sin in their own life, Jesus is everything, and we worship Him for the wonder of His grace that has cleansed us and made us righteous in the sight of our God.
