We admire men and women who have made it to the top of their profession, especially if they came from a poor background and worked their way up. They are sometimes referred to as self-made individuals, but there really is no such thing. Yes, they had to put forth great effort, endure hardship, and have patience as they moved forward, but where did all that come from? It is God who has made us, and we are His. He has given us personality traits, A, B, C types, or whatever. It is He who has given us gifts and abilities in certain areas. It is He who has open or closed doors of opportunity. Self-made? Not a chance. And this is true for each of us. God has given you gifts just as He has with corporate climbers. Your gifts are no less important. Your accomplishments don’t need to be compared to anyone. We are responsible before God to recognize the gifts God has given, and use them to the fullest to His glory. Whether one is the best industry CEO, able to preach a great sermon, or skilled in making a solid brick wall, it is our gift from God and used to bring Him honor. (Mark12:41-44)
We put a lot of effort into our education. We strive for our best in our occupation. We take pride in accomplishments. All that is fine, and we should, as long as it doesn’t puff us up with pride. Some banter around the phrase “self made people”, but there is really no such thing. Psalm 100 tells us that it is God who created us and we are His. Paul says, “You are not your own; you were bought at a price”.(I Corinthians 6:19-20) As we go along in the various stages of life we need to recognize and acknowledge the hand of God who guides, who opens some doors, and closes others. Self made? No. God made? Yes. And the more we humbly give honor and thanks to the One who cares deeply about us, the more we are able to grow in trust and live in His peace.
